Music for Ukraine - Introduction

I think many of us have come to believe that the world might have gone beyond the point where a large-scale war could be possible.  Yet here we are, trying to think rightly about the events that seem to be transpiring in the world around us. We are challenged to pray, to do what we can to help – but mostly we are challenged to watch our thinking, as we honor and promote peace in every way we can.  That's this essence of this hymn that I found in the Methodist Hymnal, a good place for this series of nightly e-mails to begin.

O Day of Peace That Dimly Shines
Words by Carl P. Daw, Jr.; music by Charles Hubert Hastings Parry

O day of peace that dimly shines
Through all our hopes and prayers and dreams,
Guide us to justice, truth, and love,
Delivered from our selfish schemes.
May swords of hate fall from our hands,
Our hearts from envy find release,
Till by God’s grace our warring world
Shall see Christ’s promised reign of peace.

Then shall the wolf dwell with the lamb,
Nor shall the fierce devour the small;
As beasts and cattle calmly graze,
A little child shall lead them all.
Then enemies shall learn to love,
All creatures find their true accord;
The hope of peace shall be fulfilled,
For all the earth shall know the Lord.

I found this as Hymn 729 in the United Methodist Hymnal. I also found it in a downloadable PDF by searching for the title at www.hopepublishing.com.  There seem to be many other sources on the Internet.
