Background. I’m looking for ideas, and
maybe you can help. It has to do with providing Solo Bank users with
original copies of music that is still under copyright. To accomplish
this, I draw on an inventory of used music that has been donated by
churches in recent years. This is music denoted by the red boxes in the
source column of each page in the Solo Bank.
Most music published in 1929 or later is still under copyright
protection. But like used books, original copies of this music can be
sold. In addition, I have obtained permission from some publishers and composers to
distribute their copyrighted music, so these compositions, as well as those
published before 1929 can be copied and distributed via email. That’s
the easy part of my sales activity, donoted by the purple diamonds in
the source column.
The Challenge. The clumsy part is the 12 tubs (12” x 11”
x 15”) that hold alphabetized scores… plus 12 bankers’ boxes of books of
music. Together, they take up a lot of space in my garage.
I would be happy to carry on my service indefinitely, but there is a
possibility that I might have to move (and lose that garage space)
within a year or so. So what should happen to all that music?
There is not a high demand for the originals of this music. Over the
past 6 months, I’ve provided about 2 originals every 3 weeks. For
comparison, I’ve provided about one PDF a week over that period.
To clarify, I'm not offering my full collection of scores and
books ─ just the duplicates.
Some Options. One possibility would be for an
organization or an individual to take this inventory and offer items for
sale. Another possibility would be finding someplace where everything
could be stored until another caretaker could be found. I shudder to
think of simply disposing of this material.
If an individual or organization accepted the material with the idea
of selling it, they could set their own prices and terms, completely
independent of what I’ve done in the past. Most significantly, I would
give them PDFs of all the pre-1929 material, as well as the material for
which I’ve secured distribution rights.
One big obstacle is transporting the scores and books. I’m in the
Sacramento area, and I’m not sure I could afford truck rental or
shipping.
So what are your ideas? This isn’t an emergency, but it would be
great to resolve this matter in the next few months. |
