As a life-long student of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy has been my constant companion. Over many years, I have turned to Science and Health and to the Bible which it elucidates, seeking healing and comfort, and I have invariably found both. I have also had occasion to read from these books to others, occasionally when they were unable to read for themselves. But it is not the simple reading of these books that brings healing and comfort. It is the inspiration that comes from pondering their message. So after many experiences of reading for others, I have come to the conclusion that what is often missing is giving listeners time to reflect on ideas that are so profound. At a Christian Science nursing facility like The Olive Glen in Sacramento, California, a lot of reading is done for the patients and residents. My own mother lived there for a couple of years, and in my gratitude for the care she received, the idea came to me to provide a resource to supplement the reading that goes on at this wonderful institution. I took a collection of citations from Science and Health that have been especially inspirational to me and made audio recordings of them. Then I interspersed the citations with simple musical interludes of the melody line of hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal. I chose the less familiar hymns so that the melodies would not be too distracting. The result is Healing Thoughts...with Time to Think. This recording is not a substitute for conscientious study of Mrs. Eddy’s writings, the Bible, and the many useful publications produced by the Christian Science Publishing Society. But I trust that it has a place in the quiet of a sick room, on a car trip, or at a bedside in the still of the night. These timeless, God-given words of Mrs. Eddy’s have blessed me in just those situations, and I know that they will bless you, too. - Dick Frantzreb |
